O Domingo de Ramos abre solenemente a Semana Santa, com a lembrança das Palmas e da paixão, da entrada de Jesus em Jerusalém e a liturgia da palavra que evoca a Paixão do Senhor no Evangelho de São Lucas.

São Lucas não falava de oliveiras nem de palmas, mas de pessoas que iam acarpetando o caminho com suas roupas, como se recebe a um Rei, gente que gritava: "Bendito o que vem como Rei em nome do Senhor. Paz no céu e glória nas alturas".
Palavras com uma estranha evocação das mesmas que anunciaram o nascimento do Senhor em Belém aos mais humildes. Jerusalém, desde o século IV, no esplendor de sua vida litúrgica celebrada neste momento com uma numerosa procissão. E isto agradou tanto aos peregrinos que o oriente deixou marcada nesta procissão de ramos como umas das mais belas celebrações da Semana Santa.
Com a litiurgia de Roma, ao contrário, entramos na Paixão e antecipamos a proclamação do mistério, com um grande contraste entre o caminho triunfante do Cristo do Domingo de Ramos e o "via crucis" dos dias santos.
Entretanto, são as últimas palavras de Jesus no madeiro a nova semente que deve empurrar o remo evangelizador da Igreja no mundo.

Era o anúncio do amor de um Deus que desce conosco até o abismo do que não tem sentido, do pecado e da morte, do absurdo grito de Jesus em seu abandono e em sua confiança extrema. Era um anúncio ao mundo pagão tanto mais realista quanto mais com ele se poderia medir a força de sua Ressurreição.
