photo colunasmelhor age is a euphemism often used in Brazil to refer to people belonging to the so-called third age or, more appropriately, the elderly.
The old term gets between us a definition in the law: "People aged over 60 years." Currently the number of elderly people is constantly increasing in the country and now exceeds 10% of the total population. The Elderly Statute, law issued in 2003, states that the Brazilian population census should include details of that segment of the population.
Between 1940 and 2006, the number of elderly registered in Brazil grew by 11 times, from 1.7 million to 18.5 million. The forecast is that by 2025 this number is in 64 million people. By 2050 it is estimated that one in three Brazilians are elderly. The society and the government must be prepared for this new reality.
Around 71% of registered elderly can have financial independence. They are responsible for an annual income of R $ 243 billion, not inconsiderable purchasing power. Only 5% of men and 23% of women in this population group declare themselves in financial difficulties.
Most of the income perceived by the elderly, around 49% is sourced from the Social Security earnings. Then, 39% of income comes from work. Revenues from rents account for 7% of the declared annual income.
Of the elderly known in Brazil, 55% are women, who have an expectation of higher life to men. The widow older women is 3.4 times higher than that of older men. Due to longer life expectancy, and have more chance of becoming widows in old age, the trend is that older women have a more solitary old age.
Similar to what happens to human life in all its stages, the time of old age is not only a period of happiness and pleasures, but are also to be found in this stage of life many adversities.
A study conducted in Sweden and published recently suggests that today people over 70 years have a more active sex life and feel more pleasure than the old three decades ago. On the other hand, due to reduced reflexes and rhythm of the walk, the elderly become the main victims of road kill in large cities.
Reportedly, the vast majority of the elderly, 83%, has already settled home. Less bad. A report by the OAB (Order of Lawyers of Brazil) in conjunction with the CFP (Federal Council of Psychology), and released a short time ago, concluded that Brazil does not have minimum infrastructure of shelters for the elderly. According to the report, some nursing homes visited by the researchers are "deposits abandoned elderly," where the inmates live "without family or contact with the community."
The systematic collection of data on the elderly in the next population census will allow the formation of a more accurate and consolidated knowledge framework on this significant portion of our population. These data can either be used to guide the stroke of far-reaching government policies, as well as advertising campaigns nature, since older people are more and more the interest of the business world operators.
