"Qual é a responsabilidade de um anestesiologista durante um procedimento cirúrgico?
What is the responsibility of an anesthesiologist during a surgical procedure?
Anesthesia contributes decisively to the success or failure of surgical procedures. This fact, significant for long operations that affect the function of vital organs such as brain, heart, lung, liver and kidneys, is also true for interventions in limited areas, such as eyes, ears and extremities of the body. The anesthesiologist is responsible for pre-anesthetic evaluation, maintaining the balance of vital functions (cardiovascular, respiratory, kidney, etc.), analgesia and, where necessary, hypnosis (abolition of consciousness) and muscle relaxation.
Generally, surgical procedures affect the activity of vital organs and put life in jeopardy, as a function of changes of the various organ systems also modify the surgical field conditions (where it unfolds surgical intervention), and can harm the results of operations.
In operations conducted on the lungs, for example, the anesthesiologist is required to modify the vent to facilitate access to the area operated without compromising lung function. For surgical operations on the heart or major blood vessels, circulation may be temporarily impaired and the object of the anesthesiologist's attention will be the preservation of potentially affected organs.
On the other hand, reflex responses to surgical stimulation result in altered function of various organs. This can aggravate diseases prior to the operation. In these circumstances it is up to the anesthesiologist to take the necessary steps to avoid decompensation of vital systems such as cardiovascular and respiratory function, among others.
In anesthesia, regardless of the technique used, the complications avoided during surgery are: hypotension or hypertension, tachycardia, bradycardia (heart rate above 100 or below 60 / minute), or other cardiac arrhythmias, the pathways obstruction air, changes in ventilation or oxygenation, nausea, vomiting, regurgitation, aspiration of gastric contents, bleeding, fever or hypothermia, allergic reactions and others.
